Question to Genelec:
Why don't you make USB to AES/EBU converter and spare us frustration?
At least provide an official recommendation that is tested and will not impact (negatively) SQ.

Hi,
I am not aware of that kind of device from any manufacturer. Genelec's core business are active monitor speakers and subwoofers. This sort of additional devices are mostly produced in China.
There is an USB to S/PDIF (coax) converter available but we haven't tested it: http://www.m2tech.biz/commerce/?mod=pro .. duct_id=46

Buy Mutec MC-3+ USB Master Clock: A-D & D-A Converters - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases.

Couple alternatives
- From China: Yulong U18 (sells around $175 or 150€ on ebay)
- From USA: Empirical Audio Off-Ramp
- From Germany: Yellowtec PUC2
These all have sample rate up to 24/192, while Mutec MC-1.2 seems to support also 32 bit sampling resolution - wonder if that makes much difference?

Here is an idea Ilkka:
Add AES/EBU output (and format conversion) to GLM box and be done with it. That would transform Genelec from components provider to solutions provider.

Thanks Gruss. I found your reference to Mutec in another thread. However, I was not able to find any reviews online.
Would you know if its 32 bit capability makes any difference (8250 being 24/192), like upsampling?

I had read through many posts here and elsewhere, DigiPete's included, however I don't have ability nor time to test various suggestions and was hoping Genelec would have a recommendation that is 'tried, tested and true'. That is so basic requirement and yet Genelec fails to fathom it. .. I'm not the only one.

Can somebody please confirm:
If using interfaces having one 24/192 AES/EBU out (like Mutec MC1.2, Yellowtec, Weiss ) do you get 24/192 kHz in both speakers (when daisy chain) or just 24/96 kHz?
Is it true that 8250 is capable of max 2x96 kHz with one cable so to get 192 kHz in each speaker (stereo) you would need interface with 2 AES/EBU outs?
Thanks

Hi,
24 bit/192 kHz works perfectly either in single or dual-wire mode.

Just received the mutec 1.2. Still trying to get it to work through the 8260.
One note about the Mutec, it only received USB and converts to AES, SPDIF, TOSLINK.

Hi lengcm,
The MUTEC MC-1.2 should be a great choice to drive your Genelec 8260s. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail or PM if you need any assistance setting it up.
FYI, the MC-1.2 converts USB to AES and S/P-DIF and back, i.e. bidirectionally and simultaneously.
Best regards,
Julian

Hi all,
MUTEC has just added another great solution for highest fidelity USB to AES/EBU conversion: On November 20th, we'll starting shipping the MC-3+ Smart Clock USB, which uniquely combines an audiophile USB interface with an audio re-clocker in perfection! Particularly designed for the demands of high-end consumer audio, the device expands a new sonic universe with increased musicality, clarity, and precision.
So in comparison to the MC-1.2, the MC-3+USB offers our improved, next-generation REVIVE re-clocking and 1G-Clock technology. The bi-directional, asynchronous interface acts as a USB isolator that galvanically isolates the re-clocking circuit from noise interference caused by music servers and audio computers. In combination with the subsequent re-clocking process these measures yield a significant improvement in the audio quality of connected digital audio devices. As a result, the audio playback will be rendered with increased depth and width, more precise imaging, and with a more musical representation of the recorded space in all dimensions. Stock consumer audio devices, laptops, and audio computers can now achieve a new level of perfection that was previously only obtainable at a premium cost or by means of luxury cables.
There also is very first review of the device translated from the German audiophile online platform LowBeats, which you will find here!

Hi all,
Just to give you an update on MUTEC's MC-3+USB that's been mentioned quite a bit in this thread: back in July we already released the new firmware V1.10 for Windows system and we have now followed up with a Mac utility app. It's a convenient and simple way to update any MC-3+USB at home. Why is this interesting? Because the new firmware not only introduce several functional improvements, it also presents a significant step-up for the already exceptional sound performance of the MC-3+USB:
Here's what's new:
-> Painstakingly optimized re-clocking algorithms. Improving the already exceptional sound quality to achieve even more clarity, resolution, and presence.
-> PCM/DSD auto-detection. Enjoy music via USB up to 192 kHz PCM and DSD/DoP streams (up to DSD256 and DoP128 respectively) without the need for manual switching.
-> Bugfixes and functional improvements
-> Update available for Windows PCs and Apple Macs
We believe this will make the device even more attractive for all of you wanting to achieve the best possible USB to digital conversion!

another satisfied Mutec USB customer here.

Currently feeding a nuforce DAC and Genelec 8020s, and OMG the difference is amazing.

Can't wait for it to be feeding some 8341s, (come on HHB, get them in already).

In the mean time, my means of feeding these future buys, are serving up a great improvement.

December 2016

December 2016, Berlin. MUTEC, German manufacturer of professional and audiophile consumer audio equipment, is proud to release a convenient utility app for firmware updates of the successful MC-3+ Smart Clock USB on Apple Macs.

Since the release of the Windows update utility in July MUTEC has received a tremendous positive response from customers who have eagerly updated their devices:

'It appears the V1.10 firmware update enhances the sound quality and makes using DSD to PCM playback better. Audirvana Plus usually does the conversion for non-DSD enabled DAC's and the method the MUTEC unit now implements is superior to that of the software. Thank you for sending the update. Much appreciated!'
- Kevin O'Brien, Your Final System, USA

'Today, my music is such a pleasure to listen to, with a truly beautiful analog-like audio signature. The improvement in my audio system with the new V 1.10 firmware is so dramatic and significant, that I am having a difficult time turning off my system every night. The timing errors that were fixed with the new clocking algorithm are certainly not going to be missed. The audio running through the MC-3+USB is now crystal clear and as smooth as 'warm butter'. I am undoubtedly a huge proponent of your product now - I just wish that I had been able to update the firmware many weeks ago!'
- Brent Miller, USA

MUTEC CEO Christian Peters comments: 'The MC-3+USB is very popular among audiophile customers using the device for USB playback from Apple Macs. As a class-compliant device this is particularly simple on a Mac since no drivers need to be installed. We are extremely proud to now offer a Mac-compatible app allowing our customers to keep their MC-3+USBs up to date with equal convenience.'

As a reminder: the new V1.10 firmware not only introduces several functional improvements, it also presents a significant step-up for the already exceptional sound performance of the MC-3+USB.

KEY FEATURES:

  • Free, user-executable update
  • Painstakingly optimized re-clocking algorithms
Improving the already exceptional sound quality to achieve even more clarity, resolution, and presence.
  • PCM/DSD auto-detection
Enjoy music via USB up to 192 kHz PCM and DSD/DoP streams (up to DSD256 and DoP128 respectively) without the need for manual switching.
  • Support for Windows PCs and Apple Macs (OS X 10.8 and up)

The MC-3+ Smart Clock USB can now be updated on both Windows PCs and Apple Mac computers. Units updated on a Windows machine will still run on a Mac and vice versa. Just like before, the MC-3+USB functions as a class-compliant audio device without the need for additional drivers. A high-performance, high-stability driver is available for Windows PCs.

Once again the firmware release package will contain several update files and a comprehensive guide taking customers through the process step by step. This is a simple and quick process that does not require special skills or computer knowledge. Both the Windows drivers and the respective firmware update packages for Windows and Mac are available for download on the MUTEC website (www.mutec-net.com).

The firmware update and the availability of the Mac app further strengthen the MC-3+USB's position as one of the leading DDC (digital-to-digital) USB interfaces and re-clocking devices. Just this last May, US-based audiophile expert Kevin O'Brien already called the MC-3+USB a 'no-brainer as it surpasses all the others in the performance AND convenience' in this USB converter shootout.

The rear panel of the MC-3+USB underlines the unit’s superior flexibility and range of connectivity options.
